Flixotide

Fluticasone propionate is the active ingredient found in the Accuhaler as well as the Evohaler. This compound is known as a corticosteroid and therefore specifically works to reduce inflammation of the bronchi. It does this by preventing the release of chemicals by the immune system that causes swelling. If swelling of the bronchi is reduced, then airways are much less prone to be sensitive to asthma triggers, but patients also experience an improvement in their overall comfort level.

If you have been diagnosed with asthma and you experience the need to use your reliever inhaler more than twice a week or you wake up at night experiencing breathing problems, then this may be recommended to you. However, there are certain restrictions and precautions that you should be aware of.

You may not be able to use either of these types of inhalers if you are allergic to the ingredients, particularly fluticasone propionate.

Flixotide Evohaler (50mcg, 125mcg, 250mcg)

This is an aerosol inhaler, so in order to use it a canister should be pressed down and it the active ingredient is breathed in with the aid of the mouthpiece. This can be difficult for some patients to do, but is a better option than the Accuhaler if you are sensitive to lactose.

Flixotide Accuhaler (50mcg, 100mcg, 250mcg)

The Accuhaler is a good alternative to the Evohaler if you find it difficult to use. The dose is activated before it's inhaled, so it's essentially two separate actions with the minimum coordination required. However, it delivers the active ingredient in a lactose powder form, which can make it unsuitable for some patients to use, although a good option for patients who are allergic to norflurane, which is in the pressurised version of Flixotide.

Providing you aren't allergic to any of the active ingredients, these inhalers are unlikely to cause side effects. The most common effects are oral thrush or a sore throat, which is often associated with the use of oral steroids. Luckily, these can be avoided by ensuring that you rinse your mouth out after every use.
