How does it work?
Logynon contains two chemicals: ethinylestradiol, which is a synthetic form of oestrogen, and levonorgestrel, a synthetic form of progestogen. These work together to prevent pregnancy in three ways. Firstly, the body is tricked into thinking that ovulation has occurred, meaning that no egg is released. However, even if an egg were released it would be difficult for it to become fertilised, as the Logynon pill will have also thickened the cervical mucus. Lastly, a fertilised egg would be unable to cling to the womb, as the lining will be thinner.

Women taking a combined contraceptive are almost 100% protected against pregnancy. If you begin taking the pill on the first day of your period, it will become effective immediately.
Because of the different doses in Logynon pills, the risk of side effects is lower, making it a good option for women who have taken other contraceptives and experienced problems such as mood swings. In addition, it is effective in treating endometriosis and premenstrual dysphoric disorder, which is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome.
How do you take it?
The most convenient way to begin taking this is to do so on the first day of your period, which will mean you are immediately protected against pregnancy. However, you can start to take it at any point in your cycle, although you will have to use another form of contraception for the first seven days.
You should take one pill per day in the correct order as they contain different amounts of hormones. You should begin with the light brown pills, followed by the white and finishing with the tan-coloured ones. After you’ve taken Logynon for 21 days, you will have a seven day break, during which time you will experience withdrawal bleeding but will still be protected against pregnancy.
What are the side effects?
The side effects associated with this are usually mild in nature and only last until your body adjusts to the hormones. Possible side effects include a lowered libido, weight changes, headaches and nausea.
