How Melatonin works
Melatonin is a hormone that is naturally produced by the body and helps dictate sleeping patterns. When it's night-time the body produces more of this hormone than during the day, however travelling to a different time zone can throw this rhythm off. In this instance, Melatonin may be required to ease the body into a new sleeping pattern, allowing you to get on with your routine as normal.
Who can take Melatonin?

How to take this medication
Melatonin is normally prescribed as a treatment for insomnia, for which the duration is three weeks. If prescribed for jet lag it should be used as and when it is needed, and only once you have arrived at your destination.
One tablet should be taken whole with a glass of water, one to two hours before your bedtime. It's not advised to take Melatonin when drinking alcohol as this may inhibit how it works.
Side effects
One of the advantages of Melatonin is that side effects are not very common, however certain individuals may experience irritability, anxiety and dry mouth. These effects are not usually serious and should only be temporary. Nevertheless, if you feel side effects persist or notice anything more serious, you should seek immediate medical attention.
