How does it work?
Despite using different forms of the two active hormones (oestrogen and progestogen), Qlaira works in the same way to other combined contraceptives by protecting against pregnancy in three separate ways. The first change is made to the process of ovulation, as the body believes an egg has already been released and thus does not release another. In addition, the mucus in the cervix becomes a lot thicker, to avoid sperm reaching the womb, the lining of which is thinned in order to prevent any fertilised eggs from attaching.
Who can take it?
Most women are able to safely and effectively use a combined pill as a form of contraception. However, there are some cases where it may not be appropriate. Women over the age of 35 who smoke will be advised against using this and it may also be unsafe for women who are breastfeeding or think they might be pregnant.
A doctor may not prescribe this contraceptive to women who are taking other medication such as antibiotics, sedatives, treatments for epilepsy or certain natural remedies such as St John's Wort.
What are the side effects?
Because of the way it closely mimics the natural cycle, Qlaira is known to cause fewer side effects than other types of combined contraceptives, but some may occur. The possible side effects include nausea, weight gain, and acne and breast tenderness. If you experience more persistent or serious side effects such as diarrhoea, liver problems or excessive hair growth, you may be advised to switch to another form of contraception.
How do you take it?
It is important to take Qlaira as indicated in the correct order, as the different coloured pills contain different amounts of each hormone. You should begin by taking two dark yellow pills on the first days of your period, followed by five light red pills and then 17 light yellow ones. Finally you should take two dark red pills and two inactive white ones, which serve to make it easier to remember to start a second pack on the following day. There is no break between each 28 day pack so it is important to take one pill every day.
