How Livial works
Livial is an oral HRT medication that contains tibilone, which is a steroid that influences the body in a similar way to testosterone, progestogen and oestrogen. These are all hormones that fall as a result of bodily changes during menopause.
By replacing oestrogen, this treatment is able to ease symptoms such as night sweats, vaginal dryness, vaginal itching, hot flushes and loss of bone mass. Replacing testosterone has the benefit of improving sexual difficulties and changes in sex drive. Finally, tibilone’s ability to imitate progestogen can help maintain womb health and prevent endometrial cancer, which is often a risk in patients who are taking additional oestrogen.
Who Livial is for
Although most women with menopause symptoms can use this treatment safely, you may not be recommended this medicine if you have recently experienced a heart attack or stroke, you are allergic to steroid based treatments, you have a history of oestrogen dependent cancer or breast cancer.

Taking Livial
It should be taken on a daily basis for the entire duration of a women’s cycle. After the 28 day cycle a new pack should be started without any break from taking this pill. You will normally be prescribed the lowest dose to start off with, which will then be increased if it is required and you aren’t prone to side effects.
Side effects
Most prescription medications carry a risk of side effects, although this doesn’t mean that everyone using a particular medication will experience them. The side effects experienced by users of Livial may include fluid retention, breast tenderness, bloating, headaches and indigestion. These side effects tend to go away as the body adjusts to the treatment, but if they persist or you notice anything more serious, you should speak to your doctor about it. Your doctor may then choose to change the treatment you are on or to reduce your dosage.
