The entire Qvar inhaler range contain the active ingredient beclometasone diproprionate. As already mentioned, this is a corticosteroid that means that it acts to reduce inflammation, particularly in the airways. This is because this compound has the ability to prevent natural chemicals that cause an immune response from being released. With long-term use, chemicals can effectively be suppressed to provide continual relief, as long as the inhaler is used on a daily basis. However, patients will still be required to carry a reliever inhaler in the case of a sudden onset of asthma symptoms.
Qvar is widely used on a daily basis by many asthma sufferers, but there are certain patients for whom this treatment might not be entirely appropriate. Patients who shouldn't use it include: those with an allergy to the active ingredient or treatments with a similar effect. Make sure that you mention to your doctor if you are taking any other treatments or you have any other health conditions.
You may choose to use this over other treatments due to the method in which it is delivered to the system. For example, if you find it difficult to use an aerosol inhaler, which requires you to breathe while you press a canister down, the Easi-Breathe and Autohaler may be better options. However, many patients prefer the Easi-Breathe inhaler because it's easy to activate the dose and simply requires a patient to breathe in when a puff is released.
The dose you will be required to take and which inhaler you use will largely depend on the severity of your condition and your own personal preference.
Qvar Aerosol 50mcg and 100mcg
The Aerosol delivers a pressurised version of beclometasone diproprionate directly to the lungs. To use it a patient needs to press down the canister filled with treatment while they inhale through the mouthpiece at the same time.
Qvar Autohaler 50mcg and 100mcg
The autohaler doesn't require a patient to inhale while pressing down on a canister, but simply to open an air vent to release a dose of treatment. The patient then has to exhale before placing the mouthpiece in their mouth and breathing in.
Qvar Easi-Breathe 50mcg and 100mcg
Easi-Breathe works just like the Autohaler, but instead of having to move a lever, the patient only needs to open a cap, exhale and then place the mouthpiece in their mouth and inhale.
These treatments are inhaled, making them much less inclined to cause side effects than oral steroids. Most of the side effects reported are usually mild and tend to eventually go away or are preventable. These effects could include hoarseness, dizziness, and headaches, changes in taste, feeling dizzy, faint, depressed or anxious.
If any of these side effects are worrying you or you notice anything more serious, you should speak to your doctor straight away.
If you are experiencing these side effects persistently then you may wish to use another medication. Visit our asthma treatment page for more information on available treatments and information on asthma.
