How does Femodene work?
The sex hormones in the female body are responsible for causing an egg to be released from the ovaries (ovulation) and for preparing the womb lining for a potential pregnancy. The synthetic hormones released from Femodene trick the body into believing that ovulation has already occurred. This prevents any eggs from being released for a possible fertilisation by a male sperm. It also alters the consistency of cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to reach the womb and changes the texture of the womb lining to make it unsuitable for an egg to develop there.
When to start taking Femodene
Take one tablet every day (starting on the first day of menstruation) for 21 days and then take a seven day break from pill-taking. During this break you will experience a withdrawal bleed similar to your normal period. Start the next pack after the seven pill-free days are up.
Precautions for using Femodene
You cannot take this if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, over 35 and smoke heavily, or if you are affected by any of the following conditions:
- Inflammation, infection or clotting in any blood vessel
- A lipid metabolism disorder
- Liver problems
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding, the cause of which is unknown
- High blood pressure, stroke, heart attack or a clot in the lung
- A history of cancer or tumours
- Otosclerosis
- Sickle cell anaemia
- Disorders of bile excretion that cause jaundice
- Gallstones
- Certain types of skin allergies and blood disorders

Are there side effects?
Femodene is suitable for the majority of women over 18. As with all oral contraceptive pills, some women who take it may experience undesirable effects.
